Zarya Cynader

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Zarya is the only lawyer we know who can sing the Periodic Table of the Elements to the tune of Gilbert and Sullivan's "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General" – a talent she has yet to find a practical use for. Outside the karaoke booth, she applies her other talents to litigating, evaluating, and securing patents and other intellectual property rights for clients in a variety of innovation-driven industries.

Zarya is equally at home advocating for leading pharmaceutical and technology enterprises in “bet-the-company” patent litigation or advising biotech startups on how to develop a global IP strategy on a shoestring budget. Clients call on her to opine on patent infringement and validity, troubleshoot market issues, and navigate complex legal and regulatory environments to ensure successful product launches.

Zarya is licensed to practice law in Ontario and New York, and in addition to her role as unofficial cheerleader for NEXUS/Global Entry, she makes sure to stay informed on the latest IP law developments in Canada and abroad. Her practice routinely involves coordinating Canadian litigation in the context of multi-jurisdictional disputes and advising on cross-border aspects of IP strategy.

When she isn't playing with her molecular models or conducting empirical studies of the dissolution rate of ice in an old-fashioned, Zarya sits on several committees of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and speaks and writes on IP and litigation topics. As an adjunct faculty member at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law, she works with the Structural Genomics Consortium to educate the next generation of creative biotech lawyers and advance the legal frontiers of open science.

Zarya enjoys math jokes, Evelyn Waugh's novels, and waxing nostalgic for the West Coast.
