Doing Good

Pro Bono Work

Our people have been behind pro bono initiatives that support innovation and entrepreneurialism. For example, Gilbert's lawyers act as pro bono counsel to FINCA Canada, a charitable organization focused on providing financial services to the world's lowest-income entrepreneurs. Many of our lawyers also regularly volunteer with Law Help Ontario, the Child Advocacy Project, and other pro bono legal clinics. Several more hold leadership positions in various professional organisations such as the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada, the Toronto Intellectual Property Group and the International Trademarks Association. And sometimes we get involved in unusual and creative pro bono cases, like challenging the NHL's rights to the Stanley Cup.

Education

Gilbert's has made a sizable contribution to the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law building campaign. We also participate in and support various instructional events, such as the University of Toronto Trial Advocacy program, and numerous educational programs organised through IPIC, the Advocate's Society and the Canadian Bar Association. At the Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, we contribute to the "Gilbert's LLP Prize in Design Thinking" award. We are also on the Program Advisory Committee for Sheridan College's Communications Culture and Information Technology Joint Program with the University of Toronto.

Community Involvement

Our people also take their passion beyond legal initiatives to the broader community. For example, Gilbert's partner Mark Eisen is a recipient of the Toronto Police Services Board Partnership Award, which recognized outstanding contribution to the Toronto Police Service and the community. Several of our lawyers have been members of the boards of charitable institutions like the Design Exchange and the Toronto Zoo. Our people even have musical talent! Some of our partners use their musical chops for good by performing at various charity events throughout the year.
