Continuing from his days as a competitive basketball player, Jim perhaps took the importance of the triple threat too seriously—choosing to study engineering, business and law. Never one to shy away from a tough match-up, Jim has worked as a Case Manager at the Western Business Law Clinic and summered at two intellectual property boutiques.

If anyone has seen Jim play devil's advocate, it is of little surprise that his focus is advocacy. While he may be too modest to admit it, if you get him talking IP at a Jays' game, it will be self-evident why he finished at the top of his law school class in Intellectual Property Litigation and represented Western Law at the Harold G. Fox Intellectual Property Moot – where he received Honorable Mention for best oral advocate. And even if that game happens to go into extra innings, that same modesty guarantees that Jim will never once boast about the recognition he has received for his substantive writing (the J.S.D. Tory Writing Prize for excellence in writing and legal research, the WeirFoulds LLP Writing Prize in Intellectual Property, the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and IP Osgoode’s national writing prize).

Prior to law school, and in between games of pick-up basketball, Jim studied mechanical engineering and management at McMaster University where he graduated summa cum laude. Jim's capstone research project was in the field of aero-acoustics, designing a low noise landing gear for a Bombardier private jet. While he co-authored three publications stemming from experimental results; he thankfully still had enough time to successfully manage too many fantasy sports teams and read anything (but not everything) Michael Lewis.
